Letter to the Editor • Unsplash - UnsplashOne reads a lot about equalization payments in the Cape Breton Post, for longer than I would care to note. But, sadly, I would argue that the Cape Breton Regional Municipality is getting exactly what it has earned. The first way is to cry foul and hope for lots of penalty shots from the referee. The second is shooting above paygrade and scoring goals the way the game was designed.

I have a handful of unanswered letters written in very polite tone to both my councillor and the mayor on everything from illegal dumpsites to dangerous crosswalks to active transportation infrastructure. That kind of laxness is certainly noted by government officials in Halifax.

CBRM commissioned input on trails and received a very strong recommendation from consultants that a trail be put in parallel to Kings Road using the unused railroad tracks currently linking Sydney River to downtown Sydney. And federal money will be distributed to CBRM if they go ahead with the sorely needed artery.Dragged its heels once again, going against the recommendations it paid for, and effectively saying no to federal funds that our region could desperately use today.

If citizens want to see Halifax budging on funding issues, CBRM needs to stop holding its ankle and waiving to the ref. Making shots above paygrade by fomenting meaningful progress is the way to get a raise in pay, no matter if one thinks the money is deserved already or not.SydneySaltWire Network welcomes letters on matters of public interest for publication.
