Work began in December to clear trees from a patch of forested land on Queens Road, outside of Montague. Residents living nearby are unhappy with the tree clearing and made an appeal to Three Rivers council to intervene during a meeting on Jan. 9. - Stu NeatbyKirsten Connor is a former chair of the Charlottetown Heritage Review Board in P.E.I.
We will lose our land and resources little by little, day after day, if we continue to allow developer-led development to occur piecemeal. Without a provincial land use plan, we will continue to have conflicts in our communities due to entrepreneurs who put their monetary gain ahead of the interests of their fellow Islanders.
Given that our population estimates are around the 175,000 mark and that housing difficulties are a daily feature in the local news, the creation of a provincial population strategy is not just overdue, at this point it is moot. What is urgently needed is a provincial land use plan., as far back as 1968, when I attended a meeting about land use in P.E.I., chaired by Charles Jones of Pownal.
The citizens of this province, Islanders, have the right to decide the manner in which Prince Edward Island resources gets accessed. If we don't choose to plan, each new developer with a bulldozer and a political connection will find a way to make a few bucks, starting with Point DeRoche, Fairview and Three Rivers until, ultimately, there is no landscape, no scenic views, no forest trails, no hidden beaches, no sheltered coves, left unscathed.
