Escalating costs are a good reason to pause, but not cancel, the project
I strongly support the development of a new central library and art gallery. I also support and commend Mayor Paul Lefebvre’s leadership in calling for a pause on this project in the wake of escalating construction costs.
However, our art gallery is hidden away in a grand, but old, mansion that lacks the infrastructure to host most of the gallery’s collection and our central library is old, dated, and lacks the space and infrastructure to meet the demands of modern library programming and services. As the citizens’ committee conducted its research, we came to some clear conclusions. Based on the experience in other communities across Canada and the United States, the success of these projects in similar-sized cities was based on creating a destination location.
Currently, we cannot host trade shows, conferences or other events exceeding 500 attendees. In addition, our current inventory of halls that can accommodate more than 300 attendees lack the technology required to host many events. I believed, and continue to believe, that this approach is the right one. The strength and fiscal viability of these projects’ rests in large part on their ability to work together. The strong synergy between these three projects offers us a pathway to being a true leader in Northern Ontario, and indeed, Ontario. We need to rid ourselves of silos and look at what we need to do to insure the long term operational and programming success of these projects.
