Daurene Lewis posed for portrait in front of the replica Seaview African United Baptist Church on Africville lands in Halifax in 2011. Canada's first Black female mayor, Lewis died in 2013. - FileAlyce Feindel is a cookbook and children’s book author living in Halifax, who is now writing her memoirs and tales of her early life in a small town. She provided the following reflection.
Lorne married one of my best friends, Mary Hennigar, from Chester, N.S. — a rare"mixed marriage" in those days. I remember visiting them after their marriage; they were so happy and sure of the step they had taken. After giving birth to three girls and living in the community of Rockingham for many years, they made many friends. From my point of view, they were always acknowledged as contributors to the city activities and welcomed as such.
The Lewises were a well-known and respected family in the town. Daurene was a nurse and held a PhD. She was also a principal at the Leeds Street campus of the Nova Scotia Community College. In 2001, Lewis became the first Black Canadian senior administrator in the history of the Nova Scotia Community College. She completed an extended term on the board of directors of Canada Post and the Governor General’s Order of Canada Advisory Council. Lewis was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2002 and also received the YWCA volunteer award, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal and Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
