John Reade of St. John's wonders if it might be possible to establish hostels for homeless Canadians.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOS

'Hostel' is defined as an establishment that provides inexpensive food and lodging for a specific group of people. I’ve been thinking about that as a possible solution to the homeless situation here in Newfoundland, as well as other places. Hostels themselves would be run by charity organizations, or as a private business. The residents could help pay for their accommodations by working around the complex or getting low-paying jobs using the hostel’s address as theirs.

There are government-owned buildings around the province and country that are derelict. Part of the feasibility study would be to determine the cost of the renovations these structures would need to become a hostel.
