Anna Penney questions the decision by St. John's to close the Paul Reynolds Swimming Pool for maintenance

From all the poor decisions made lately by staff at the City of St. John's, I'm left wondering who is making the decisions, council or public works? The latest decision that leaves me perplexed is closing the Paul Reynolds Swimming Pool for maintenance from Aug. 27 to Sept. 9.

Schools in St. John's area don't open until Sept. 6, so the children will miss out on nearly two weeks of swimming sessions. I read that the maintenance is scheduled, but don't these people have a school calendar? They must have realized that the Aquarena was going to be shut down for a year beginning on Sept. 1, which leaves the children without a pool in the east end and, from past practices, we know Bannerman Park Pool will also be closed.

Before Coun. Bruce tells us that the City of St. John's has been reverified with High Five Accreditation, there is nothing in that award that mentions timely closures. I can only hope that, sometime down the road, that the mayor and councillors realize they work for the citizens of St. John's and should be aware of how they decisions are affecting participation.SaltWire Network welcomes letters on matters of public interest for publication.
