Let's get one thing straight: Arya Stark is NOT a 'Mary Sue' via nparts
At the end of last Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones, we saw Arya Stark deliver the fatal stab to the Night King, the seemingly invincible ice monster who has haunted the series throughout its eight-season run.
Even the boyfriend of Maisie Williams, who plays Arya, was surprised it wasn’t Jon. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Williams said, “It has to be intelligently done because otherwise people are like, ‘Well, couldn’t have been that bad when some 100-pound girl comes in and stabs him.’ You gotta make it cool.
The term “Mary Sue,” which seems to be entirely misunderstood here, describes an unrealistically perfect fictional character, always female, inherently kind and too well-rounded to be uniquely likeable. Think Rory Gilmore, Bella Swan or Beth March. Over the course of the series, we watched her fend for herself, defeat and evade countless foes, looking some directly in the face, including Tywin Lannister in Season 2, when she posed as his servant at Harrenhal.
This is in contrast to Jon, who proved to be something of a bumbling fool on the battlefield. Not only did he struggle to keep his dragon afloat, but he charged at the Night King on foot and unmanned , and gave up by dropping his sword and screaming in frustration into Viserion’s face right before Arya saved the day. As Ygritte warned us long ago, he knows nothing.
