That winter P.B. Calloway converted a farm wagon into a prairie schooner — fastening iron hoops across the top to support the canvas cover. The wagon was equipped with a single bunk and a cream separator was mounted in the front corner along with a compact wood stove for cooking.
While her husband was away tending his last crop before the move to Leduc, Maud Calloway decided to get a head start and made the decision to journey to Leduc before him. In June 1923 she, her two teenage daughters Helen and Edith — who rode on horseback — and her three-year-old daughter Gwendolyn began their arduous five-month journey to their new home.
The final part of the journey from Kingsgate to Leduc was by train with the wagon, cattle and other belongings loaded onto rail cars. They arrived many weeks later in Leduc where they stayed with their uncle. On Halloween night 1923, the Calloways were reunited with P.B. Calloway who was coming in from Spokane along with Helen Calloway, who had returned to her father partway through the journey to help with the harvest.
