“It should be a real boost.” The acquisition of veteran centre Ryan O’Reilly and depth forward Noel Acciari brought excitement to Leafs dressing room.
“Your goal I think has to be that you’re trying to win. And if you’re trying to win, you’re trying to win the Stanley Cup,” said Dubas in explaining the moves that really needed no explanation within the Leafs locker-room.“I was excited. It was tough to sleep,” Keefe said. “I’m trying to think as a coach of all the different options that it presents and got excited about it. I’m just like the players, I’m thrilled we were able to make our team better.
No question Dubas mortgaged the future. He traded away his first-round pick and a third-round pick in 2023, a second-round pick in 2024 and Marlies Mikhail Abramov and Adam Gaudette to St. Louis, who retained half of O’Reilly’s cap hit. Then he sent a fourth-round pick to Minnesota to absorb more of O’Reilly’s cap hit.
They got O’Reilly’s cap hit down from $7.5 million to $1.875 million and Acciari at $1.25 million, and should still have some space if they can find a depth defenceman by the March 3 trade deadline.
