Kyle Dubas could wind up getting an interview as GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins after all, a week after he said it was Leafs or bust.
That has not been confirmed on the Pittsburgh side yet. Led by David Beeston of the Fenway Sports Group, that club was well into the process of looking into leading candidates Dan MacKinnon , Eric Tulsky , Steve Greeley and Jason Karmanos .
But should he even get to the interview stage, Dubas would have to walk back a portion of Monday’s emotional address.Article contentAs of now, Toronto and Pittsburgh have GM openings, while Craig Conroy is the favourite to replace Brad Treliving in Calgary. Treliving came to mind as soon as Shanahan said the next Leaf GM must have “experience” after he’d hired Dubas at age 28 and subsequent appointments by Dubas to hockey office positions were mostly newcomers.
Beyond July 1, the Leafs have to decide on which free agents they want to keep or discard and get moving on extensions for Auston Matthews and William Nylander, if the latter is not traded in an attempt to break up the Core Four, consisting of the two, plus Mitch Marner and John Tavares.Article contentGoing into the draft with an ad hoc committee versus a general manager is not unfamiliar to the Leafs.
