Brandon Chafe and Thomas Barnes were arrested more than a year ago
Robert Belbin leaves a provincial courtroom in St. John's during a break in his trial Monday, July 24, 2023.ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Two men charged with a shooting in Goulds last summer have elected to be tried in provincial court, although their trial can’t be scheduled because they’re still waiting to see thousands of pages of evidence in the case against them.
Lawyers Erin Breen and Robert Hoskins, representing Chase and Barnes, respectively, have expressed their frustration with the delay, which is reportedly due in part to an unexpected temporary leave of a prosecutor. They were arrested after members of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to a call for service in the area of Pipeline Road and Robert E. Howard Memorial Drive in Goulds the evening of June 19, 2022, and arrived to find a man with a gunshot wound and other serious injuries.
