Crews were seen here in early December 2021 continuing the work to try to trace the source of gas that has already caused a massive explosion in downtown Wheatley. A number of gas leaks have also been detected since the first hydrogen sulphide gas leak occurred in early June. The Strosberg Sasso Sutts lawsuit points to previous gas leaks detected at that location starting on June 2, 2021, when the mayor first issued a declaration of emergency.
The claims and allegations contained in the lawsuit, which was filed in Superior Court of Justice in Chatham on Friday, have yet to be argued or proven in court. The lawsuit names six plaintiffs representing those who suffered personal injury, property damages and business losses. A second part of the Wheatley lawsuit alleges that local officials failed in their “duty to take all reasonable care” after owners and residents were barred from accessing their properties in the evacuation zone surrounding the blast site. “They didn’t take care of those properties,” said Strosberg, citing frozen pipes, food left to rot in fridges and kitchens, and insects and rodent damage.
