This article reports on the House Representatives' outcry against an opposition plan to divert attention from the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte. Two lawmakers dismissed the impending complaint against Speaker Martin Romualdez and other House leaders as a baseless attempt to derail the proceedings and shift focus away from Duterte's alleged misconduct.
House Representatives leaders voiced their concerns regarding a plan by opposition members to shift public focus away from the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte. On Sunday, two lawmakers characterized the impending complaint against Speaker Martin Romualdez and two other House leaders as a feeble attempt to divert public attention from the legislature's pursuit of holding Duterte accountable for alleged misconduct during her tenure.
Deputy Majority Leader Paolo Ortega of La Union and Assistant Majority Leader Jay Khonghun of Zambales stated that the proposed complaint aimed to accuse Romualdez, Majority Leader Manuel Jose Dalipe, and Rep. Zaldy Co of budget insertions in the 2025 national budget. 'There is no basis, another fantasy and fiction. It is obvious that the goal is to divert public attention from the real issue,' asserted Ortega. Khonghun echoed this sentiment, stating that the anticipated allegations against the Speaker represented another attempt to undermine the House's strong support for Duterte's impeachment. 'Speaker Romualdez has been instrumental in ensuring that the rule of law is followed, and now he is being targeted to weaken the case against VP Duterte,' he emphasized. The complaint against Romualdez, conveniently coinciding with the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, further fueled suspicions for Khonghun. Ortega warned that attempts to derail the impeachment trial through politically motivated cases would ultimately prove counterproductive. He urged the Senate to maintain its independence and resist external influences that could sway the impeachment proceedings. 'The Senate must not be swayed by political distractions. The people demand transparency and accountability, and they will not be fooled by these diversionary tactics,' he stated.
