CEBU CITY — A senator has urged local government officials to prioritize preventive health care and foster healthier lifestyles as a sustainable strategy to address rising health care costs and lessen the demand for hospitalization and burial assistance.
At the Philippine Councilors League Cebu year-end assembly on Thursday, Sen. Pia Cayetano cited the need for proactive health initiatives, saying prevention is more cost-effective than treatment.'The first step though starts with each one of us, the responsibility on our own for our own health. And that's awareness of what does it take to be healthy. You have to exercise, you have to eat properly,' she said.
These reforms have also targeted emerging health risks such as the rise of e-cigarette use among young people, with additional taxes imposed on vaping devices and heated tobacco products.Cayetano's advocacy aligns with her broader vision of empowering individuals to take charge of their health while supporting government policies that discourage harmful habits.
