Shootings involving street gangs have been on the rise in Laval for the past few years, with most of the incidents taking place in Chomedey, Laval-des-Rapides and Pont-Viau, Brochet said. In August, one alleged member was arrested as a suspect in a May 9 afternoon shooting that was carried out in Chomedey. No one was injured in the shooting, but the individual, a 25-year-old man with a long criminal record, was charged with attempted murder. His case is still pending at the Laval courthouse.
“I think we have to do more, and we will do more,” Boyer said. “I would like us to have more officers patrolling the streets, more people who can perform surveillance of suspects, more investigators to ensure that all the necessary information is collected.” “We have to work with kids to avoid that they join gangs,” Brochet said. Schools are “where street gangs are recruiting their members. That’s where they put pressure on kids. Sometimes, the only model kids have is the street gangs, with money and big cars. We really want to give them another model.”
