The plucky Alpine Canada team of 12 athletes and about 20 support staff burst out of the gate two weeks ago and has kept pushing. With just the men’s slalom to come on Sunday in the French Alps — where Erik Read is Canada’s only entry — two Canadians have been crowned world champions and the team has collected an unprecedented total of four medals.
Alpine Canada’s president and CEO Therese Brisson hopes this level of success will inspire more corporate investment and perhaps allow them to level the playing field at least a bit. “And proud but not satisfied, I guess. We’ve known for a while we have some very good athletes. There has been a real concerted effort starting from the board, to the leadership team, to the coaches and staff and the athletes just working so hard and believing they can be amongst the very best in the world, despite being at huge competitive disadvantages. It’s absolutely something we saw coming and has been part of our vision and aspiration for some time.
While Canada’s alpine skiers have won 33 total medals at worlds over the years, good for ninth overall in the historical table, until this year there had never been more than three at any one competition.Article content
