Lat, or Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid, is the first cartoonist in Perak to receive this honour.
“I was in disbelief but I felt happy,” he said of the recognition, which was announced yesterday by Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah when he graced the opening of the Lat House Gallery in Jalan Bemban, about 5km away from Kellie’s Castle.“It reminds me of my friends who are royal painters. Just take a look at Selangor and Johor; the palaces have always recognised local arts. So, I am thankful to Sultan Nazrin for giving me the recognition,” he told reporters.
“I had several discussions with the state government and I decided to have the gallery in Batu Gajah, as it is located just 30 minutes away from my village,” said the 72-year-old. Lat said he hopes the gallery would hold art classes and workshops in future. The Lat House Gallery is housed in a traditional Malay Perak Limas house, which features five roofs.
The gallery consists of several sections such as the main building, two exhibition areas, a Lat exhibition area, Lat art garden, souvenir shop, cafe and an office.Lat’s youngest son, Hadi Mohd Nor, said his father was thrilled with the opening of the gallery.“He wants to bring his friends to the gallery and since he is now residing in Ipoh, he is able to visit the gallery frequently,” he said.
