AFL legend Michael Long has begun a 650-kilometre walk to Canberra in support of the Yes vote in the Voice referendum, repeating his historic 2004 journey made to raise the voices of Indigenous communities.
This time, Long is walking in support of the Yes case for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament at the upcoming referendum.
"It's a simple question that we're asking the Australian nation, to acknowledge Aboriginal people in the constitution [to] advocate on issues that we face in this great country of ours," he said.The former Essendon star said he wanted the walk to show that the Voice was not about "pointing the finger","We're all Australians here, but we still need to have that respectful conversation," he said.
"What are we going to leave behind, when we're gone? … How do we leave it better for the next generation?"Merryn Apma Daley, who joined Long on his first walk to Canberra in 2004, said she felt compelled to repeat the marathon journey in a bid to "bring unity in the Australian community".
Over the next couple of weeks, the Long Walk will move through Nagambie, Shepparton, Benalla, Beechworth, Albury and Wagga Wagga before arriving in Canberra in mid-September.polling suggests is most likely to back a 'Yes' vote in the upcoming Voice to Parliament referendumVictorian Labor Premier Daniel Andrews stood beside Long on Sunday and again put his political weight behind the Yes case.
