The Environment Protection Authority has warned that the rest of the NSW economy would have to make steeper cuts to greenhouse gas emissions to compensate if the proposal to continue Hunter Valley Operations goes ahead in its current form.

The NSW environmental watchdog has described a plan to extend the life of one of the Hunter Valley’s biggest coal mine operations to 2050 as the “largest coal mining proposal ever” in the state, and warned that the rest of the economy would have to make steeper cuts to greenhouse gas emissions to compensate.

The EPA letter, dated May 23 and uploaded to the planning portal last week, is intended to guide the decision-making of the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure and the NSW Independent Planning Commission. Hunter Valley Operations general manager Dave Foster noted the EPA letter did not oppose the proposal, and the company had already committed to some of the consent conditions suggested by the agency. However, the company had “several concerns” about the letter’s contents.

The coal is proposed to be exported via a rail link to the Port of Newcastle, which is the biggest coal port in the world, but is preparing for a post-coal future tothat key export customers such as Japan, Korea and China were rapidly phasing out coal and the market could die within a decade.
