In 2005, he was bestowed the nickname “landslide Lukaszuk” after a judicial review turned what had been a five-vote election night defeat in Edmonton-Castle Downs into a three-vote victory four months later.went through a similar process in the weeks following the May 29 vote, one still remembered well by Lukaszuk.
“You talk about a nerve-racking experience,” he said in an interview with Postmedia. “It’s a humbling experience to lose by just a few votes and then have to litigate.” His case was eventually heard in an all-day hearing at the Alberta Court of Appeal. As the ruling was being worked out, Lukaszuk remembers waiting in a law firm’s office across from the courthouse until his phone rang around 11 p.m.Thomas Lukaszuk is welcomed by Premier Ralph Klein as he attends his first PC caucus meeting at Government House since being declared the winner in his riding of Edmonton-Castle Downs after a recount appeal.
