Searching a Manitoba landfill for the remains of two women could take years, cost hundreds of millions and has no guarantee of success.

The search was approved and police obtained a warrant and started searching the dump in June of 2021, about six months after Brettell, a man living with Asperger’s syndrome and other disabilities, went missing from a rooming house in January of 2021.

The excavation of the site included multiple teams, including the department’s homicide and K9 units. Theasked TPS officials if they could confirm how much the search cost, but a spokesperson said they could not share that information before Thursday’s press deadline.Article content The study concluded that a search was “feasible,” but said there is no guarantee that it would be successful at discovering the remains of both or either of the women.Article content

But some Indigenous leaders in Manitoba, including Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Cathy Merrick, have pointed to the successful search for Brettell in Ontario as proof that those types of searches can be successful, and as a reason that there should be a search at Prairie Green for Myran and Harris.
