Now that the dust is starting to settle in the wake of last week's election, all eyes are on the city's new Mayor-Elect Olivia Chow.
Hardly a strong mandate, even if it’s become the norm for this town. Certainly not one to provide the necessary cover for big, bold action, particularly in such a divided City Council.Article contentIt sounds like many are expecting Chow to stride into City Hall and solve all of the city’s problems.
It seems a safe bet that the election promise to tax the rich will happen quickly. Between an additional land transfer tax for properties over $3 million to punching up the dud of a vacant home tax, provided they can get through Council, these seem like certainties at this point.
You want meaningful change that will really truly help housing get built? Maybe start with blowing up the planning department and rebuilding it into one that actually works to get shovels in the ground. But that will take time and tackling bureaucracy isn’t particularly sexy to voters. Considering the large tent the Mayor-Elect is going to need to actually lead, the coalition that will be required to make big moves, Strong Mayor powers or not, is large enough that she’s not going to be able to help her most ardent supporters eat the rich straight out of the gate.
