Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg said there were legitimate questions about how it would operate, and called for a Parliamentary inquiry into the referendum question and scope of the body.

A lack of legislation on an Indigenous Voice to parliament risks sinking cross-party support in the looming referendum, with even the Coalition’s strongest advocates demanding more detail.

“I think it’s a reasonable position. I think any other approach is putting it at risk,” the NSW senator said. Mr Dutton’s position is at odds with Labor’s current approach, which is to release a set of design principles in place of legislation, which would be developed after the referendum.which is drawing on three existing reports that have discussed design options.

“Anybody who says there’s not enough detail, I would invite them to go and read the Calma-Langton report,” Mr Bowen said, referring to the 272-page document proposing a core model for the body.
