'We've had brilliant engagement from the Government,' says Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham

It follows a review commissioned by the Mayors. At a press conference in Manchester to launch their report, Mr Burnham called the plan “viable, practical and affordable” and said he would now be pressing the Government to endorse it.The report calls for a steering group – including the private sector, regional combined authorities and central government – to be set up at speed with the aim of producing a feasibility study within six months.understands she was not available.
The Department for Transport declined to offer any firm commitment to the establishment of a steering group, but did not rule it out. “We’re not having a situation where we have to live with 19th or 20th-century infrastructure whereas the southern half of the country gets 21st century infrastructure, it’s not right. It needs directly to be challenged, as I will continue to do, if we don’t get a plan together.”
