A new suite of immigration detention laws allowing the government to more easily deport people will be introduced in parliament today.

A new suite of immigration detention laws allowing the government to more easily deport people will be introduced into parliament today with just hours notice ahead of a crucial High Court challenge over the Commonwealth’s ability to lock up people who refuse to return to their own country.

Shadow immigration minister Dan Tehan has criticised the lack of time given to scrutinise new detention legislation.“Everything this government does with regard to immigration detention is rushed is chaotic, is botched. And there is a complete and utter lack of transparency,” Tehan said. A government spokesperson said the new bill would “further strengthen our immigration detention network by providing extra tools to deport individuals from Australia.”Despite holding the legislation in his hand during the press conference, Tehan would not reveal what was in it.

“What I’m saying to you is, I hope that the courts can do the job, because I can tell you, the government can’t seem to be able to do this.”The Coalition is calling for a late Senate sitting, adding the Coalition wanted to “do everything we can to support the government in doing the job that it is failing to do in keeping Australians safe”.
