Labor to introduce laws to break up CFMEU after Setka stoush

The move has come in response to union boss John Setka’s war on the AFL and is likely to fuel tensions between Setka and Labor.

Already a subscriber?The Albanese government will introduce laws to split the CFMEU and allow its manufacturing division to leave the union in response to John Setka’s war with the AFL over the past week.

While Labor has been working on legislation to allow this for weeks, Mr Setka’s recent behaviour is understood to have hastened the move. At the time, the former Morrison government moved legislation – backed by Labor – to allow the CFMEU’s manufacturing and mining divisions to leave. Mr Burke also condemned Mr Setka’s threats last week, saying “you don’t blame the public servants for obeying the rules of the public service for the government of the day”.This week, aware of manufacturing’s attempts to demerge, Mr Setka’s Victorian branch sought to distribute petitions in the construction supply chain to oppose the division leaving the union.

However, it said: “If workers in the textile and clothing, paper and forestry industries want to leave the CFMEU, we respect their wishes.
