That said, international aviation is hardly a bastion of the free market, with governments the world over using aviation regulation as a form of industry protection of their national carriers.Some may argue the Gulf state state-owned Qatar may be using the pandemic disruptions and lag in the number of flights returning to normal to expand its petrodollar-subsided operations on the Australian route.
In this case, however, protecting Qantas’ bottom-line from competition is good for cosseting the still highly unionised workforce of the once publicly owned airline.
