Labor has put Australia back on the people smuggler “shopping list” with its decision to abolish Temporary Protection Visas, according to Nationals leader David Littleproud.

The Albanese government is fulfilling its election pledge and allowing approximately 19,000 refugees who arrived by sea before 2013 to stay permanently in Australia.

“What Labor has done is give a product to the people smugglers – they have effectively said that the market is open again,” he told Sky News host Rita Panahi. “You have taken away one of the three key pillars of Operation Sovereign Borders which was about turning back boats, offshore processing, but the third element was Temporary Protection Visas.”
