An Indigenous Labor MP says a suicide epidemic is crippling her home community, calling for urgent attention to address the “crisis”.

“We’ve had three terrible suicides in this community in less than a week,” she told Sky News Australia. The Tiwi Islands are home to about 3000 people and are famous for producing some of the country’s greatest Australian Rules footballers.

“This is the fourth young man that I call grandson that has taken his life and it hurts, and it runs deep and we’ve got to stop accepting this is the lot of young men in remote Aboriginal communities,” she said. “People are talking about the cheeky one again which is Kronic which … in the past has caused a lot of issues with young men not being able to cope once they’ve smoked it,” she said.“We’ve got to stop this from happening. It’s a crisis and no-one’s looking at it,” she said.

“The issue of young men and suicides aways seems to slip under the radar and I think we’ve got to stop ignoring it, something’s got to give,” she said.

Kamahl was ‘spot on’ with $40 billion Indigenous spending claimKamahl was ‘spot on’ with $40 billion Indigenous spending claimSky News host Peta Credlin says Kamahl was “spot on” during his interview with The Project, where the musician claimed Australia spends about $40 billion every year on Indigenous people. Ms Credlin points to the Productivity Commission’s 2017 Indigenous Expenditure Report, which states the total direct government expenditure on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians was estimated to be $33.4 billion in 2015-16. “Then there's all the specific Indigenous programmes run by state and federal governments, such as the $4.5 billion a year spent by the National Indigenous Australians Agency,” she said. “Adjusting the 2016 figure in the Productivity Commission's report for inflation, well, that gives us a figure of $39.5 billion in Aboriginal spending today.” Ms Credlin warned against “misleading” and “deceptive” commentary surrounding the Voice to Parliament debate.

‘The Voice is a political ploy to grab power’: Warren Mundine‘The Voice is a political ploy to grab power’: Warren MundineLeading No campaigner Warren Mundine says the Voice referendum is a political ploy to grab power from the Australian nation and traditional Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples. “The Voice is not about whether Indigenous Australians are recognised, respected or listened to, and it’s certainly not about how to improve the lives of Indigenous people,” Mr Mundine said at the National Press Club on Tuesday. “I believe many well-meaning Australians support the Voice because they believe it will solve problems because they believe Indigenous people want it. “Sadly, I think many Australians also feel they must support the Voice because of misplaced guilt about Australia's history, but I don't think all of these supporters have grasped the path this referendum is taking us down. “I believe they don't see the threat that the Voice poses to Aboriginal traditional owners and to the character of Australia itself.”

Warren Mundine urges government to use reports to identify problems in Aboriginal communitiesWarren Mundine urges government to use reports to identify problems in Aboriginal communitiesLeading ‘No’ campaigner Warren Mundine says the federal government should be utilising reports to help identify what’s working and what’s not working among Aboriginal communities. “The issue for me is about enthusiasm … like Closing the Gap Report and the Productivity report,” Mr Mundine said. “Two brilliant reports that go to parliament every year which points out where the gaps are and what’s happening and what’s working, what’s not working. “We should be then utilising those reports and moving forward. “Just a few weeks ago the Productivity Commission brought out that said for every dollar that’s put into indigenous affairs only 33 cents of it actually gets to the ground.”
