If you suffered through Thursday night’s unwatchable slog-fest that saw the awful Indianapolis Colts somehow eke out a 12-9 overtime win over Wilson’s bumbling Broncos in Denver, you witnessed plenty of fresh evidence. Wilson was sacked another four times, to raise his season total through five games to 16 — 3.25 per game, a rate worse than any of Wilson’s 10 previous seasons.
Joe Burrow and Deshaun Watson are the only active QBs in the elite conversation who have a higher career sack rate than Wilson, but on short sample sizes. For years, observers and most fans would forgive Wilson’s high sack totals as a loss-leader, of sorts, for all the magical plays he could routinely conjure. Such magic was in short supply last year after Wilson missed a mid-season month to allow a mangled throwing-hand finger to heal.
