Dear President Biden, We finally got to D.C. it was an eye\u002Dopener, in the best possible way.
Of course, we were impressed with the city: the grandeur, the magnificent museums, the massive monuments, and the mall. However, what was even more impressive were the people … not just in Washington, but in all the states we visited.
You were travelling with many aides last week. Mr. President, my husband and I travelled with even more aides. In our drive to and from Florida, we relied on the goodness of your fellow Americans. I’d like to celebrate the many kind folks who welcomed and assisted us along our way.
A special thank you to the young man at a gas station in Davenport, Fla. who managed to retrieve our credit card after we jammed it in the machine. And to Paula, the knowledgeable, enthusiastic tour guide at the Museum of American History, and Katrina, at the Virginia Welcome Centre, who assisted us when I foolishly forgot my purse at a restaurant along Highway 81.
I did have a moment of apprehension. After stopping for lunch at a restaurant, we got turned around and missed the ramp for Hwy. 81. We turned into Pottsville, Pa., went down the street and then I made an abrupt U-turn. I ended up in a short line of cars, waiting for a light to turn. Suddenly the car in front of me turned off, the driver got out and started walking towards us. It was a drizzly, cold day and we still had hours to drive.
Goodness still exists. Unfortunately, the acts of kindness that we bestow upon each other don’t often make the news. It’s easy to fall into despair when we’re inundated with reports of the negative behaviour of a small percentage of our populations.. That pretty well sums up what you and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were saying here, last week. Our countries are old friends. We need each other. Our families, our friends and our businesses are on both sides of the border.
