After rocking the world for over 50 years, KISS is saying farewell

It was 50 years ago that a Queens borough-bred band destined to become one of the biggest acts in rock music history first cranked its amps up to 11.

KISS arrived at a time when glam rock was all the rage, hard rock was the music of arenas and punk rock was coming soon. From its kabuki theatre-inspired make up to an act that borrowed from vintage horror films, sci-fi flicks and comic book heroes and villains, the quartet put together a mix of theatrics and stick-in-your-head hooks to become one of the biggest concert draws in the world.

Band history lists a show on Feb. 5, 1974, at Edmonton’s Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium as the beginning of the band’s first tour. They practically lived on the road for the next few years. Musical success took a little longer to land, but the release of the double live album, titled Alive! on Sept. 10, 1975, catapulted the band into gold-status sales and the live version of rock ‘n’ roll All Nite into the Top 40. Destroyer came out the next year and produced the ballad Beth, which became the band’s first Top 10 single. Other album tracks that became classics include Detroit Rock City and Shout It Out Loud.
