Even failed relationships are still permeated by love: love of children, love of extended family, love for the possibility of a new life.
People get sued when they are terminally ill. Some die in litigation. Adults behave in unbelievable ways towards children, injuring them, wrongfully removing them from the jurisdiction, failing to take them to their sports practices. My personal experience of doing hundreds of cases has at times felt like a movie reel of people’s most challenging moments. Clients frequently cry in my office. They certainly express a lot of frustration, especially while the process is ongoing.
The fact that Valentine’s Day is for everyone is the first reason for a family law lawyer to like the holiday. Because one thing that is apparent to those of us who work in settling failed relationships, is that those failed relationships are permeated by love: love of children, love of extended family, love for the possibility of a new life. And Valentine’s Day embraces all of that. It can be great fun to head out to the pharmacy and to pick up quirky cards for kindergarteners.
And Valentine’s Day is like that too. For those who are single, it offers up a question: who might be out there for me in the future? Who might I stumble upon in the grocery store? For those in good relationships, it is the hope of more good times. Love and the breakdown of love are two sides to the human vulnerability coin: there is no soaring without the possibility of crashing. The fact that we crash, and need to get divorced, is evidence that we tried for love.
