The Late Late Show presenter won't be joined by his wife Cat Deeley and their children on his first show - but the boys are set for a head explosion when they hear about The Toy Show
Patrick Kielty has told how he reckons he has “a healthy level of nerves” ahead of his debut as The Late Late Show host — which he’s hoping “translates into an energy and hopefully a good show.”And Patrick told Chic how he is “humbled” and “excited” to be taking over hosting duties — and opened up about watching the programme while he was growing up.
“This was in the ’80s and my job was to — there was a little switch that you had to flick underneath the TV to swap the two aerials. So Friday night for me, it was just flicking the aerial and sitting down and watching it. “I said, ‘yeah, well, look — we’ll see what we can do’. Cut to, I’m now the host of The Late Late Show — and I think there’s a rule that you can’t interview yourself.”
“And then it’s also that weird thing of…because Cat also works in TV, she knows how busy a first show is and how there’s so much stuff that’s ticking along. She’ll probably come to one once we’re up and running. He continued, “There’s the excitement for me to be hosting the show, and then you’ve got that other thing where for them, coming down the track, there’s going to be a Toy Show in their life.”
“And that’s why, every day when you walk in, you realise that you’re really, really lucky to be hosting this, you know — because , ‘it didn’t need to be me’.” “You don’t want to ring anybody and put bad luck on it, so it was easier to keep it a secret than you might think — just because you’re not really believing that it’s real.”
Patrick also opened up about whether he’s feeling any additional nerves or pressure around taking up the hosting duties following the recent RTE payments controversy. “Weirdly, I don’t think it makes it any harder — I don’t think it makes it any easier. But it definitely makes it different.” “If I’m having a serious conversation with someone, I want it to be serious and get to the heart of what it is. I think that tonally, it’s just about trying to be you and be honest about who you are.Patrick added that The Late Late Show will “still have all of those elements in it that make it a really special show” — and told how there’s “nothing quite like live TV”.
