Party colleagues are keen to expel the Florida hardliner from the caucus after he led a vote to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. But he’s unperturbed.

| Hardline Republican Matt Gaetz stood in an unfamiliar spot on Tuesday as he pressed his case to boot Kevin McCarthy from the role of House Speaker – the Democratic side of the chamber.

New York Republican Michael Lawler told reporters he thought Gaetz should be expelled from the party’s conference but that he had not taken any actions to begin that process. Colleague Garret Graves said repercussions for Gaetz would be “pursued in the conference”.

Graves assailed the Floridian on the House floor for soliciting campaign donations on the back of his motion to vacate the speakership.“That’s not governing,” McCarthy added. “That’s not becoming of a member of Congress ... It was all about his ethics. But that’s all right.” McCarthy approached Gaetz on the floor, then walked away, appearing dejected. Meanwhile, Mike Rogers from Alabama stormed over and lunged at Gaetz before being restrained by a colleague. The Floridian sat unperturbed.McCarthy was elected speaker after midnight in the 15th round of voting when Gaetz and other right-wing hardliners voted “present”, lowering the threshold McCarthy needed to win office.
