Even if all eight girls are found guilty, there could be a great disparity of punishments.

But even the five other girls wouldn’t face that stiff a punishment even if convicted of second-degree murder and handed an adult term. Convicted killers who are 16 or 17 years of age have their parole ineligibility set at seven years if found guilty of second-degree murder if the court is convinced to treat them as grown-ups.
Police have indicated three of the accused had prior contact with authorities, but that doesn’t even mean those girls have previous criminal convictions.
