Australia is 'well on the way' to resolving its trade disputes with China but the Trade Minister has acknowledged he needs to 'keep the pressure on' to bring an end to sanctions.

Trade Minister Don Farrell has conceded he needs to"keep the pressure on" after coming away from a meeting in China without key trade sanctions ending.

China slapped sanctions on Australian wine, barley, lobster and beef in early 2020 during the height of tensions between Canberra and Beijing. But Mr Farrell defended the outcome of the trip by noting it was"the first step along the way of a pathway of resetting the relationship and stabilising it"."Yes, you're right there was a lot of goodwill expressed on both sides. More work needs to be done," he said.

"The trade impediments didn't occur overnight and they're not going to be resolved overnight. My job is to keep the process going, to keep the pressure on to resolve it."
