Former prime minister Scott Morrison has been grilled for not answering questions directly related to his role in the Robodebt scheme during Wednesday's Royal Commission hearing.
The scheme was introduced in 2015 when Mr Morrison was the social services minister and was expanded when he was treasurer.
During the first three hours of the hearing, Mr Morrison reiterated the scheme was aimed to tackle welfare fraud and increase the pursuit of outstanding debts. He began to defend his position as social services minister but was stopped short when Commissioner Catherine Holmes asked him to leave out"unnecessary" details. “I do understand that you come from a background where rhetoric is important. But it is necessary to listen to the question and just answer it without extra detail; unnecessary detail."
“My job was to ensure that the system was run appropriately, efficiently and there were not payments being made that weren't supposed to be made," he said.
