The leader of an Edmonton-based spiritual group was granted bail Friday after being charged with sexually assaulting four women. John de Ruiter was released under strict conditions.
College of Integrated Philosophy leader John de Ruiter has been charged with four counts of sexual assault.
He is not to contact any of the complainants or their family members, either directly or indirectly through his followers. The judge also directed that de Ruiter not be alone with any female person except for his wife, daughters or immediate family members unless under the supervision of a responsible adult who is not his wife.
Police believe there may be additional complainants. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward. Bottos said the nature of the allegations make the case an unusual one, where questions around consent, coercion and whether spiritual gains were expected in exchange for sexual acts will be central to the case.
