Thank god for writing royalties, says Jonathan Biggins, who reckons politics is stuck on repeat and the new puritanism is hard to poke fun at.
, there’s a sliding door moment as he drops into character. Suddenly, I feel like I’m across the table from the prime minister. A blink later, and Albanese is gone. Biggins has segued into a rumination on the magic of revue.
Today, The Cottage has an extensive wine list and some groovy-sounding cocktails: salted caramel espresso martini, anyone? But with a show looming, Biggins rules out alcohol and, after a quick scan of the menu, settles on steak frites. The line on the Trump ad, “Let’s make America pray again”, must be hard to resist. But still … Biggins despairs at the way politics appears to have gone in circles since the turn of the century.was in 2001, he notes, and more than two decades on, illegal immigration is still being used by one side of politics to wedge the other.
Biggins has had plenty of experience channelling Keating in the revue, but the play was still a long time coming.
