Forty years after his idol Seve Ballesteros slipped on his final green jacket, 28\u002Dyear\u002Dold Spaniard Jon Rahm slipped on his first on Sunday.
Rahm would not be denied, taking the lead for the first time on Sunday at the sixth hole and never looking back. He pulled away at Amen Corner, where so many Masters have been won and lost. After that, the coronation was underway.Misjudging the wind at the famously tricky par-3 12th hole, Koepka made bogey to fall to seven-under for the week, three strokes behind Rahm at 10-under.
As Rahm looked to be pulling away, on the horizon was a cloud of LIV Golfers gathering with Koepka, Phil Mickelson, and Patrick Reed all in the top-five. The low final round came from a hard-charging Mickelson. The 52-year-old six-time major champion has been at the centre of the storm disrupting the world of professional golf for more than a year.
It’s Rahm’s second major championship and fourth win of 2023. Sunday would have been the 66th birthday of five-time major champion Ballesteros. Sergio Garcia also won on Ballesteros birthday in 2017.Mackenzie Hughes was the only Canadian to make the cut, shooting a two-under 70 in his final round to finish tied for 29th at one-over par.
