Under Shaw’s guidance, the penalty kill turned around nearly 180 degrees, going from the league’s worst to one of its more effective groups. And the Canucks’ defence efforts improved as well.Article content “Dealing with a team that has struggled with a defensive structure when we came here, I think he’s one of the best teachers I’ve been around,” he said.
“In a game where I think we over-coach, in that position and I think that’s what Brad is really good at,” he said. “Just getting a foundation of understanding where you should be on the ice. In a league where everybody’s running all over the place, that position takes on a lot of different looks…I think he’s really good at teaching where they should be, so they’re not chasing the game, the game’s coming to them.
Not only were the home team spaces expanded and access to the shared hallway changed — where in 2014 Tortorella famously tried to confront then-head coach of the Calgary Flames Bob Hartley, leading to a suspension and the season spiralling out of control — but the visiting team’s room has been renovated and the surrounding access points and workout areas altered, something visiting teams having expressed some frustration with both the Canucks and the league.
