The final step in the process entails President Cyril Ramaphosa removing Hlophe from office.

The parliamentary vote on his removal from office wrapped up a short while ago and the results are now in.

House chair Cedric Frolick announced on Wednesday: “The result of the division is as follows. There’s no abstentions. 27 voted against and 305 voted in favour. The question is accordingly agreed to, and the house resolves to call for the removal from office of Judge President MJ Hlophe. This resolution will be communicated to his Excellency the President.

In terms of the Constitution, he has no discretion in this respect and “must” act in line with Parliament’s decision. Hlophe was found guilty of gross misconduct for his attempt to improperly influence two Constitutional Court justices in a case involving former president Jacob Zuma.
