But the right setting does help.At that exact moment, she was sitting in the bookstore at the back end of her building, which in addition to a bakery, café, and grocery store, also houses a craft co-op, a custom skateboard manufacturer, and an indoor skateboard oval.
The roof was gone, moss and trees were growing on the top floor. The end of the building, where the bookstore now stands, had collapsed. Watson eventually arrived there in a roundabout way, living in Halifax first, where she married, then a back-to-the-land existence in Jamaica, before moving to the South Shore of Nova Scotia in the early 1970s to start a homesteader’s life.
The partners lacked a unified vision for what the building would become: condominiums said one, an artist’s studio another, a retail outlet to sell things imported from Mexico another still. “At first, it was just blurry,” she said of what she saw flipping through the ledger pages. “And then I started noticing things.”Today, 30 people work at the business. Her youngest child, a daughter named Sadie, grew up at the bakery, one of the “flour bag babies” who slept on the stacks of flour bags there as their mothers helped Watson bake bread through the night.
