Screen grab of Dick Stacey from Stacey's Country Jamboree. When the young folks get a little smug about the expansive technological world in which they live, when they show, with a click of their laptop, how they can connect to the rest of the universe, or, with Alexa’s help, how they can make Harry Styles tap dance on their iPhone, I purse my lips and nod. Then I tell them about a man named Dick Stacey and his Country Jamboree.
The story goes that in 1973 a salesperson for Channel 7 in Bangor called and asked if he would by an ad on the station’s Country Jamboree, a show which Emily Burnham of the Bangor Daily News recently described as “equal parts talent show, gong show and country and bluegrass showcase.” At some point so did Halifax-born broadcaster and author Howard Green, who sometimes watched the show in the basement the DeMont family home, with my brother Philip.
That is how I remembered it, too, but just to be sure, I had a look at an old YouTube video, a sort of Stacey’s Country Jamboree’s greatest hits, which seemed like something from a different, simpler time, which I suppose it was. The latter though were exceptions. Most everybody on Dick Stacey’s stage was having a time — the folks singing their hearts out for their mothers and sweethearts, the older woman from Halifax doing a sort of countrified hornpipe, the raucous cowboy hat-heavy audience to which the camera periodically cut away shaky cinema verité-style.
