Joe O'Shea column: Pubs finally reopening is going to be a tense, weird experience
We’re not talking having to make a booking, arriving at the same time as your carefully vetted and limited number of family members and sitting nervously over a plate of lasagne, chips and coleslaw before your allocated 90 minutes are up and you have to run for the door.
You’ll be just starting the second pint – nervously brought to you by a lounge girl wearing full protective gear – when sirens and flashing lights go off under your table and you’ve got sixty seconds to get out before the publican is legally required to douse you all with a bucket of Jeyes Fluid. You can’t borrow the racing pages and if you want to use the toilet, then your timing is going to have to be bang on as you’ll have to book it online via an app. Of course, we can’t really just open up everywhere and just rush back to normal.We are all going to have to make changes and sacrifices big and small and you could say giving up your Saturday afternoon with the racing, a few pints and a toastie in a packed bar is not too much to ask when people’s lives are at stake.
It’s not just about going to the pub. It’s about being able to stroll around shops looking for bargains, meeting a friend in a busy cafe for tea and cake, just enjoying the little things in life we used to take for granted a few months ago.
