We also had a freezer full of recently purchased food we’d never get to eat and a weak Norwegian maple whose many long branches prevented crews from restoring power and telecommunications for close to two weeks to us and our neighbours I remember in those days of showering in the cold and eating sandwiches by flashlight that there was talk of another system behind Fiona. Hurricane Ian was travelling up the coast.

I could not, would not listen to any talk of another tropical storm and, luckily for me, Ian never made it to our waters. “It’s becoming more challenging,” he said during our Sept. 12 conversation, noting that social media chatter can start about a storm when it’s far too early to know how it’s going to affect the region.

The message to be calm and stay informed was also delivered by the P.E.I. government this week, at a Sept. 14 news conference involving Public Safety Minister Bloyce Thompson and director of emergency management, Nick Policelli.
