“Portia White to me is such an iconic Canadian, but by and large, the knowledge of her is not in the minds of everyday Canadians,' Afua Cooper told Jocelyne Lloyd ahead of a film screening honouring the late Classical singer.
, one of 13 children to an accomplished Black pastor and his choir director wife. By the age of six, Portia and her family had moved to Halifax, where she began singing in her mother’s choir and developed an early passion for performance.
Nevertheless, she fought for a career that would involve music awards, radio spots and international tours. She was the first Canadian to perform at New York’s Town Hall in March 1944, where she gave two more concerts before her retirement in the 1950s. One of her last performances was at the 1964 dedication of the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown before Queen Elizabeth II. Portia White died in 1968.
“Many times, you will hear teachers and the general public say, ‘We’d like to know more about Black history, but we don’t have the sources or the resources to do so.’ So, from my end,” Cooper told me, “I thought, why don’t we give them the resources?”was born. The three-year project begun in 2021, funded by Canadian Heritage and housed at Dalhousie University , partners with African Canadian groups across the country to offer expert research and ready-to-use curricula about Black history.
