The head of a leading job recruitment company advised local companies to hire younger employees to cope with the new ‘digital normal’ amid the COVID-19 crisis. Paul Rivera, chief executive officer of Kalibrr, emphasized that many of the top leaders in Philippine corporations are technologically challenged, causing the need for more digitally-adapted young employees in ensuring the stability of the firms.
“Digital is often feared as being too expensive, unnecessary, or just too complex," Rivera said."My advise to older boardrooms is to get your grandchildren in the boardroom, people who are digitally native that are familiar with all the tools that they are using to their day-to-day lives.” By hiring technologically adept employees, Rivera explained that businesses can advance to the digitization of their operations which is a vital component in the new ‘digital normal.’ Rivera cited the e-commerce industry, which was well-utilized during the enhanced community quarantine as outdoor movement was restricted. Among the most sought after e-commerce services in the country during the past two months are online shopping and online food or grocery delivery. “If you’re not adapting and acquiring these digital skills and tools, it will be hard for you to operate not just in this current lockdown situation but also in this new normal where we may be going to semi-lockdown to lockdown to quarantine over and over again,” Rivera explained. However, he noted that the rapid digitization of business services in the country lags behind its other Southeast Asian neighbors like Indonesia and Singapore as the strategy was only adopted at the start of the ECQ. “It’s digital or die, both from the consumer perspective as well as the corporate perspective,” he said. In terms of the local job market, Rivera said the country will now shift from being an employee-centric to employer-centric amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He explained the employers will have more bargaining power now, especially that some huge corporations in other countries are resorting to mass layoffs due to losses from the stoppage of work caused by the pandemic. At present, Rivera noted that the country has not reached that level yet due to the national government’s strict job security regulations. “DOLE has been quite flexible in terms of providing rules and guidance around temporary furloughs and re-negotiating wages,” he said.that 7,000 workers in the country may become jobless in the next six months as businesses are expected to take a hit. The Department of Labor and Employment has been providing cash subsidy for informal workers affected by the quarantine through its COVID-19 Adjustment Measures Program .
