Jesuit list of members 'credibly' of abuse includes 13 local links
The list of Canadian Jesuit priests and brothers who have been "credibly accused" of sexually abusing children includes 13 people who served in Sudbury and Spanish and on Manitoulin Island.
"We cannot rewrite the past," Rev. Erik Oland, the head of the Jesuits of Canada, said in a statement. "We do wish to contribute to reconciliation, to right past wrongs and to rebuild trust." The review provided the information needed to compile the list. It was completed earlier this year after delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic that forced the closure of the provincial archives in Montreal.
They include the names of staff at the Spanish Indian residential schools that operated in Spanish, Ont., and were the subject of investigations conducted by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The order said in a statement that the release of the names is part of the Jesuits' effort to promote transparency, accountability, justice and healing for survivors of abuse.
